Today’s workplace has a diverse range of ages, maybe even four generations, which can be a challenge for employers. Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z have different preferences and priorities. Office design and fit-out company Evoke Projects has tips for designing a workplace for a multi-generational workforce.

    Does age matter?

Technically, no. Designing an efficient, productive and rewarding workplace should always consider the diverse needs of employees.

For multi-generational office design, identify areas of potential difference and look for the best solution so that everybody has access to what they need (within reason of course!).

For example, we may assume younger people are more proficient with technology / older people are less proficient. However, there will always be individuals that sit outside ‘their box’. What is important is designing a workplace that enables all people to access and use workplace technology effectively. Training can fill skill gaps. And it doesn’t need to be formal and expensive. Ask ‘those who can’ to teach ‘those who can’t’. This collaboration will increase connections and camaraderie between people at work for a happier workplace.

    Mentorship

In the same way that some people have technology skills, other people have workplace experience or company knowledge that can take a long time to learn. Pairing or grouping people together with different skills in a mentorship program creates an environment of togetherness and connection.

    Flexible workplaces are critical

A flexible workplace fit-out with modular furniture and activity-based work zones is a sure-fire way to success. At a corporate level, you can design and change spaces according to need. You give employees the option to work in a space that suits their style of working and the task at hand, regardless of their age. Open, collaborative spaces are perfect for creative brainstorming and teamwork. Enclosed offices will ensure comfort for private meetings. Quiet zones await those who need peace for focused work. Breakout areas offer space to unwind and reinvigorate the mind.

Flexibility in work location and patterns will be popular for all generations. Younger generations tend to prefer remote working or co-working spaces. They need to be attracted to the office so tempt them with collaboration and social opportunities. Parents will appreciate flexibility around child-rearing and dealing with school holidays and child sickness. Similarly, older workers may be caring for aging parents and juggling medical appointments. Allowing workers to customise their benefits and holiday entitlements is another way to create a flexible workplace.

    Create a well place

At Evoke Projects, we are all about designing well places – environments designed to enable people to ‘do well’. A workplace that supports physical and mental health will engage and motivate staff to be their best and most productive selves. This will mean different things to different people.

Gen Z and Millennials are likely to feel supported in an eco-friendly workplace where sustainability and biophilic design elements are evident. Work-life balance is very important to both groups. Gen Z are the most in favour of open plan office designs for connection with colleagues. Millennials tend to switch jobs more frequently than other generations, so employers have to work hard for loyalty! Homely office design with lounge style furniture appeals to Millennials.

Gen X enjoys teamwork but is easily distracted by a noisy office. This generation likes conveniences such as a work café or lunchtime exercise classes in the office. Gen X values autonomy and independence so they will appreciate a choice of activity-based zones with a preference for solo work booth furniture.

Baby Boomers are often focused on their health and aging so corporate wellness programs and health screening can reduce their stress. Investing in older workers to help them stay up-to-date with industry changes is morale-boosting. Baby Boomers cherish collaboration opportunities, but they will be first in line for the private office!

All generations will feel the benefits of good acoustics, natural light and ergonomic office furniture.

Ensure age diversity at management level

Try to include different age groups in leadership roles. This will bring a richness of thoughts and ideas and ensure that every generation is considered when making policies and procedures.

    Recognition

One thing all generations have in common – a need for recognition. Recognition for achievements, hard work, teamwork, ideas and contributions. Find ways to celebrate your people and watch the motivation, loyalty and productivity improve!
