Client Objectives:

Express O Coffee is a cutting edge coffee roasting and café supplier with in-house barista training located on the Central Coast of NSW. They distribute fine coffee and machines to a wide geographic region and have regular visitors to the premises, so their office design has to reflect their vibrant brand identity.

Express O Coffee wanted a modern-industrial designer vibe in the completed office fit-out, with their large, red coffee roaster as a focal point of the office design.

Project Specifics:

Evoke Projects was already well-known to Express O Coffee, managing the fit-out of their previous offices. Express O Coffee had commissioned initial plans from a third party designer, but they were not suitable and would exceed the construction budget. They invited Evoke Projects to undertake the full concept office design and development, project management and construction.

The expansion into a warehouse space offered a fantastic open-plan opportunity, but it had to be balanced with privacy for the non-public areas. Evoke Projects created an office design with a distinctive open-plan area to showcase the large, red roaster as visitors walk in through the front entrance. This fit with the client’s objectives to make the roaster a statement piece, even though the roaster must be located at the back of the building for access and operational reasons.

A state-of- the-art barista training room was included in the office fit-out and provides an excellent facility for trainees to learn about making fine coffee the Express O way. The trainees also have a viewing window to watch the roaster in operation.

Importantly, the new, stunning Express O Coffee outlet includes industrial-style polished concrete and a black exposed ceiling in the public spaces, while generic tile ceilings in several office areas were used to keep the cost down.

The industrial/coffee/café theme is further evident in the office design through natural wood- texture materials in the joinery, distinctive privacy screening, and raw concrete in the flooring and exposed external walls of the building. Feature lighting accents special areas, while natural coffee tones fused with mochas and caramels complete the theme. The use of black gives an understated sophistication and allows the pops of red to highlight the feature roaster.
