    Medical design trends for 2025

While caring for patients is the mission of all healthcare practices, the majority are run for profit. A medical design that sets your business apart from others will attract new patients and encourage patient loyalty. Medical design and fit-out company Evoke Projects looks at the healthcare design trends that will give you a competitive edge in 2025.

    Biophilic medical design

Biophilic design introduces nature-inspired elements into the healthcare fit-out to make people feel calm and relaxed. Any medical design that is patient-centred design will most likely include biophilic touches.

Where possible, consider both the interior and exterior experiences. A scenic pathway, vibrant courtyard or a display of native plants on approach to a medical appointment will lift the spirits. Once inside, natural light, water features, air-purifying pot plants, nature-inspired artwork, birdsong background noise and outdoor views are all biophilic design elements that will hit the spot. Technology can also help with digital artwork and scenery.

    Sustainable design decisions

Eco-friendly medical design choices are popular with staff, patients and other stakeholders.

    • Choose materials that are environmentally friendly and long lasting. This reduces waste and gives a better return on investment.
    • Energy efficient lighting, water fixtures and HVAC systems save money as well as the planet.
    • Smart technology and sensors will support these systems to be even more efficient.
    • Furniture or decorative pieces made with reclaimed wood, recycled metal or upcycled materials will make a statement.
    • Bamboo, cork and recycled tiles are sustainable floor coverings.

    Multifunctional spaces

In 2025, we will continue to see a focus on flexibility. Multifunctional, flexible healthcare spaces cater for diverse medical needs, unexpected events and evolving technologies. Movable partitions and versatile furniture are the most cost-effective choices for easy reconfiguration. Working with an experienced medical design company will ensure your healthcare fit-out is future proof.

    Welcoming healthcare design

Overseas, we are seeing a trend to bring healthcare closer to home. Designers are taking a neighbourhood approach, with multiple healthcare providers in one ‘village’. In Australia, we are more likely to see this approach in areas close to major hospitals, but people often have to travel long distances to access healthcare in person. It is therefore even more important to design a welcoming practice.

Welcome patients by creating a homely environment. Use warm, inviting elements like soft lighting, comfortable seating and natural materials. Add plants, artwork and calming colours. Some practices allow local businesses to display and sell products, giving patients something to browse while waiting, along with retail therapy!

Hotels have a relaxing, welcoming vibe so this is another approach you can take to design. Focus heavily on the waiting area. A concierge to welcome and explain. High-end furniture and cabinetry to add a luxe feel. A café with full barista service. Let the imagination run wild!

    Calm spaces

Calm spaces are both welcoming and naturally healing. The design trend to offset the clinical and often emergency nature of healthcare with calming influences will set your practice apart.

    Calming examples include:

    • Tranquil colours, such as blue, green and earth tones
    • Biophilic design elements
    • Sound-reducing acoustics
    • Thoughtful wayfinding and streamlined patient flow
    • Greater privacy
    • Adjustable lighting
    • Comfortable furniture
    • Patient-friendly technology
    • Accessible design for individuals with disabilities, children and older adults.

    Well-places™

The focus on well-being in the workplace has never been greater. Every week, the news brings us stories of workplaces in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Healthcare practices are very aware that workplace well-being matters both reputationally and for the bottom line. Staff who are healthy and feel well-treated have lower rates of absenteeism and are better equipped to care for patients.

The team at Evoke Projects create well-places. We set healthcare practices up for success. To discuss a new medical fit-out for 2025, please call Evoke Projects on 1300 720 692.
