Matt started his career in 1997 with an apprenticeship at Pluim Detail Joinery, working on aged care, bank fitouts, and high-end joinery. He completed his apprenticeship at Central Coast Area Health, earning an Advanced Certificate in Building Supervision. From 1997 to 2006, he worked at Gosford Shopfitters, rising to foreman and managing high-end projects for clients like Westfield and Grace Brothers.

He then joined JEA Property Services as a territory supervisor, overseeing various properties from the Central Coast to Queensland. In 2006, he founded Breakaway Maintenance and Contracting, specialising in hospital services and commercial fitouts. Matt later worked as a contract site manager for several companies, handling major projects like the Gosford Council Chambers. Most recently, he served as a senior site manager for Evoke Projects until January 2024.
